D&BTV Player Updated

This weekend i added several updates to the D&BTV Player which included a new archive player and a new admin feature ‘Now Playing’.

The live application is now loaded into a swf container which also loads the archive. The container is fully resizeable which matches the behaviour of the child applications which means normal, fullscreen and Facebook embedding works perfectly at any dimension (except really really small).

I was a bit worried at first considering both the child swfs were fully blown applications in their own right but with a few tweaks everything worked like a charm with only a couple of strange issues which were later found and resolved.

At present the container loads both applications and provides a button to toggle between views. This needs refining as does some of the UI but the reality is that both sub applications work with no conflicts.

My favorite feature of this combination is i can now click one button and go from full screen live to full screen archive!

As for the admin application there is now a new page which enables an admin to dispatch a Now Playing notification to all chat room connected users which specifies track, artist and a clickable link back to the Breakbeat store so during a live show there is an ability to use the current audio to have an in context reference back out from the application to drive download sales.

The Now Playing feature also helps an admin by allowing full track and artist search against the download store database, so the correct audio files can be verified and urls checked easily before any notification is sent to the viewers – This will be a great help when the admin is stuck in a club trying to manage the stream etc.

Check out the D&BTV Player and let me know your feedback and suggestions!

Old Experiments With 3D

At last having some time to myself i started looking at old ideas, here’s a few that could do with some further experimentation:

  • Content Planet A spinning globe of content where each item can be clicked to open a video stream.
  • Video Wall An interactive 3D wall that responds to mouse movement. Clicking on an item launches a video stream which is mapped to the uv coordinates of the elements in the wall.
  • PaperVision Stats 3D Statistics with the ability to drill down/up the data hierarchy to facilitate year/month/day/hour views.

MLS Live – Prototype v1

I spent this weekend building a new live video/audio player for the re-launch of My Live Session MLS Prototype V1

My Favourite Flash Site Of The Year

Be@ TV does it all for me, great Job – it’s what i aspire to!

Multi Format Video Player With PureMVC & Papervision2

Here’s a rough demo of my latest flash video player:

The MyLiveSession Demo

Currently using old video files and images from the good old MLS days…better assets make it look a lot nicer!

In this setup i’m streaming .flv via rtmp from Flash Media Server; When i get time i’ll add some demos showing custom (psuedo stream) and progressive .flv plus a demo of the windows media overlay to handle .mpg, .mp4 and .wmv files via http all within the same UI.

I’d love to know how the preview function works for you – you can activate it by hovering your mouse over the prev/next buttons, just wait 5 seconds and the image shown will change to a video of the next stream, audio will switch as well (NOTE: some of the videos currently avaialble dont have audio for a few seconds once they start – so it’s not so obvious). When both stream are playing what is the performance on your computer like, acceptable??

Feedback and suggestions appreciated, cheers.

An Idea How Flash Video Could Allow Us To Rate Content?

Wouldn’t it be great if IPlayer/4OD and the like showed us not only the most popular content (as they do now) but also the bits we the public enjoyed the most? Why not allow us to rate not just the whole stream but also specific sections within it? What if we could search for tags and comments or points of interest within a stream? What if the producers could produce and adapt content from actual user data?

Take a look at my TV Review Application

It records your feedback as you watch the content by recording the data you generate when dragging the slider around. It also adds tags when you laugh, boo or add a comment that along with the feedback data are perfectly in sync with the FLV data.

Try my Video Reporting Application

Here’s how the captured data could be visualized:

Ok so perhaps dragging a feedback slider is rubbish… What about recording the points of interest as markers (either good or bad) and then after watching the whole stream and commenting on it as a whole, being able to comment on the markers one by one? Try this First Feedback Review Idea

If you’re into data visualization you might also find my Heat Maps Demo of interest.
